It’s so great to see organizations, volunteers and professionals all putting their energy together to help young people dream and realize personal success.

Project GRAD is a nonprofit partner of Cincinnati Public Schools whose goal it is to help students succeed in the classroom and in life. More than 2000 students have strengthened their academic skills, their relationships with parents and their self confidence as a result the organization’s programs.

And recently, forty 2011 graduates of Western Hills University High School were honored by Project GRAD with Rising Star Scholarships totaling $134,000. Scholarship recipients had a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average, completed the college recommended academic requirements and participated in two Project GRAD Summer Institutes.

Congratulations to them for all of their accomplishments…and thank you to organizations like Project GRAD for encouraging them to be their best.

An absolutely beautiful video that is a must watch. In Japan, the goal of this grade 4 class is to learn how to live a happy life and be a caring person.  We can learn a lot from watching their lesson.

Caught Being Good

I love this.  What a fun and creative way of encouraging positive values in children. When I visited the R.C. Durr YMCA preschool last week this caught my eye. Teachers there are on high alert every day…to catch good behavior. And from the looks of it, there is a lot of good behavior to recognize. It’s amazing how when you reinforce the behaviors you want to see more of, that’s exactly what you end up seeing.

To take the time to read to or with a child is to care enough to be a part of that child’s success. Nurturing adults in an impressionable young person can make all the difference in the world when it comes to motivating that child to want to give it his/her best.

A little time is all that Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) is asking for in its recently launched campaign with the Strive Partnership.  Called ‘Be the Change’, the campaign hopes to recruit 2,000 tutors for ALL CPS elementary schools with 875 of them helping students specifically in grades 3 to 8 of the seven schools rated in Academic Emergency by the Ohio Department of Education.

The campaign also is the first coordinated recruitment campaign across multiple partner organizations who share a commitment of helping students achieve academic goals. Partners include: the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati, the University of Cincinnati Center for Community Engagement, the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, the United Way, the Council of Christian Communions, the Marvin Lewis Community Fund, UGIVE, 100 Black Men of Greater Cincinnati, Whiz Kids and Whole Again International.

“This year we have added training for our tutors in reading and math to better prepare them to work with our students and make the tutoring sessions more meaningful,” said CPS Deputy Superintendent Laura Mitchell in The Resource Wire.

As part of the ‘Be the Change’ campaign, students were tested in August, 2010 to determine who would benefit from a caring adult working with them for 30 to 45 minutes weekly.
